Organic Food Industry

Organic Food IndustryOrganic farming is not a new concept in agriculture history. This was the way we practiced farming, until few decades ago when agro- chemical farming was started. In today’s world where people are being more and more careful about what they eat, they are also concerned about where this food comes from. The hazards of chemically produced food are life threatening. The result of this awareness is making us switch from chemically produced food to organically produced food.

Organic food industry is on a boom as people are becoming more aware and making their switch to organic food items. According to studies the organic food market in USA alone increased from 1 billion in 1990 to 2 billion in 2007. Organic foods are quickly filling up the shelves in supermarkets as they are much in demand.

Typically organic food cost more than their chemical counterparts. But the awareness among consumers has led to more and more companies coming up with organic food. Thus the competition increases among them, and this leads to lower or reasonable prices. Many organizations are promoting organic farming. This results in more farmers being employed. In many countries this organizations have to follow strict standards and regulations. Many countries have their government recognized as well as privately held organization which promotes organic farming industry.

Organic Food IndustryThe cost of producing organic food is high due to higher maintenance in growing the crop. Many are not willing to pay the higher price in spite of the immense benefits. The other major hurdle is the perishable nature of the produce and the high cost of getting the produce certified by the authorities for sale in the organic category.

These hurdles shall be done with once people are well-educated with the benefits that the organic food offers, till then the industry will have to come up with innovative ideas to keep it going.
